Context
eCase by Evaran is clinical management software used daily by nurses, carers and clinical managers across residential aged care facilities in Australia and New Zealand. As the company’s first product designer I was in charge of design ops and several core clinical modules, owning the full design process from discovery through developer handoff as well as upskilling the rest of the team on good modern product and design practices.
Designing for this product is challenging for three reasons:
The legacy frontend limits what can actually be built
Health tech is a highly regulated industry where you can't move fast and break things
The product team doesn't have much experience with modern design processes.
Within my first months I was running two major clinical initiatives in parallel - a redesign of the core assessments and care plans module and the digitisation of a deterioration warning system (DEWS) for the New Zealand market.
Beyond feature work, I've contributed to the company design culture and driven an uplift in how the company designs and ships software:
Rebuilt the design system into a modernised and coherent foundation, positioned as design groundwork for the future frontend modernisation.
Supported the product management work - using Claude to produce detailed, interaction-level acceptance criteria and QA guidance to give devs specs at a depth the team couldn't previously produce.
Replaced large, unfocused customer co-design sessions with smaller, more focused validation sessions with clinicians and customers - stabilising decisions and ending late-stage requirement churn.
Presented at the eCase Customer Conference, delivering multiple presentations to customers and industry stakeholders.
Facilitated knowledge sharing workshops to help upskill the product team in discovery and prototyping methods.
